The late May steady weather conditions and temperatures, along with clean water and the influx of baitfish into the marshes has put the inshore Redfish into a frenzy! Mid-outgoing tides into low-incoming tides have produced good numbers of redfish for anglers in the lowcountry marshes of Charleston, SC lately! Follow the baitfish and match the hatch! I know this sounds familiar and is not new news to most, but finding the flats and creeks that have the most active bait have been producing more active redfish. Find that scenario, then you just have to use the bait that are present. Which has been finger mullet over the last week. For the lower tide conditions mentioned above, the setups and the tackle we have been using is as follows:
Rod / Reel: 7ft medium to medium hvy w/ fast tip spinning rod / 3000-4000 spinning reel
Rigs: 15-20lb fluorocarbon leader to 1/4oz jig head or carolina rig (1/4oz weight-swivel-fluorocarbon leader-1/0 K hook).
The trout bite has equally been on fire as well. We are targeting them on the higher incoming and outgoing tides around main feeder creeks and main and secondary points with a popping cork rig. Using the appropriate amount of fluorocarbon leader material for the depth of water we are fishing. Usually 2-3ft of 15-20lb fluorocarbon. Top it off with a 1/4 jig head or just a 1/0 K hook at the bottom with a live shrimp of finger mullet and you are set. The trout bite has been fast and furious, so it has been important for us to take advantage of it when they are going off.
